Have you ever thought about volunteering at a nursing home, then had second thoughts? Hesitations such as, "What could I possibly do there?" or "Nursing homes are depressing." These thoughts are normal, especially if you are unaware of what goes on in a nursing home. In reality, it's fear; fear of the unknown. But the only way to get past this fear is to become familiar. The belief that nursing home residents have nothing to offer, or to gain because they are confused, tired, or aged is untrue. They still feel and have specific interests and a desire to enjoy life. They are just like you and me.

Nursing homes today, like the Cordell Christian Home, welcome the outside world in. Having visitors, volunteers, and activity programs help residents maintain their sense of well being and belonging. For a volunteer, the opportunities are endless! Volunteers can read to a resident, play a card game, listen to music, or just initiate some good ol' coffee and conversation. A volunteer could bring a pet, a coin collection, a favorite movie, or a remembered piano duet. Maybe you're the type that's good at offering a supportive hand or a good ear to listen. No matter your interest, gift, or passion, there's always going to be a resident who would love to share it with you. Allow the Cordell Christian Home to help you conquer your fear. Relax and come on in.
